Shata (Sudanese Chilli Sauce)

To really get your metabolism going and your tastebuds on fire, here is a fantastic chilli sauce which comes from Sudan. It's simple - but it packs a big punch of flavour and will turn any bland meal into something spectacular :) It keeps well in the fridge in a sealed container for up to two weeks and it an accompaniment to anything you can think of!

Shata (Sudanese Chilli Sauce)

1 cup fresh lemon juice
3 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tbsp dried chilli flakes
1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
1/2 tsp salt

To Make
1. Mix all ingredients together well.
2. Let stand for at least 10 minutes and the serve with anything.

  1. Great recipe Keely! Love the colors! What restaurant have you had the best Shata? Remember to add it to your Besty List!

  2. I'm Sudanese, a traveler and a foodie. I've tried the different types of shatta, especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This is a great recipe for sure, I love shatta and make enough of it to freeze and use whenever I felt like it. Not all Sudanese can handle very hot shatta but it's a stable on every menu!
